2025 Road Tax Changes for Campervans

30 October 2025

There have been some recent changes to Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), or road tax as we more commonly call it, for your camper van. What you pay is dependent on your vehicle weight, engine size, age and fuel type.

This blog will outline these changes and how they might affect you.

2025 Road Tax Changes for Electric Vehicles (EVs)

As of the first of April 2025, EVs are no longer exempt from VED, this applies to both old and new vehicles.

They will pay £10 in the first year and then £195 from year two onwards.

There are also supplements to EVs costing over £40,000 of £425 a year for 5 years after the first year then returning to £195.

Road Tax for Camper Vans Under 3,500kg from 2025

Campers in this weight bracket are designated as Private Light Goods Vehicle (PLGV) and are taxed relative to their engine size.

Engines of or below 1549cc, petrol or diesel will pay a flat rate of £220 per year.

Engines over 1549cc will pay a flat rate of £360 per year, petrol or diesel.

Road Tax for Camper Vans Over 3,500kg from 2025

Campers in this weight bracket are designated as Private Heavy Goods Vehicle (PHGV) and incur a flat rate of £165 per year.

Historic Vehicle Exemption from Road Tax

Rest assured my friends that this little benefit of tax exemption remains untouched. Your vehicle must be over 40 years old and must be officially registered with the DVLA as an historic vehicle.

    Reclassification as Campervan

On completion of converting a van into a camper van it is important to register it as such with DVLA as it may attract a lower road tax bracket than a commercial van.

This is providing that you can evidence that your van meets the DVLA recognised criteria of what a camper van is, namely, permanently fixed sleeping, cooking and storage facilities in a layout resembling a camper van.

    Summary

Hopefully the above information will help you to understand and budget for your camper vans road tax costs and highlight any changes that have occurred since April 2025 that may be relevant to you.

Please check your specific rates online with the DVLA.
