Launched in 2003, the Volkswagen T5 succeeded the popular T4 and brought a more modern design, increased comfort and a wider choice of engines. Introduced in 2003, the first-generation Volkswagen T5 featured an all-new body, improved refinement and a wider range of petrol and diesel engines than its predecessor. With increased cabin space, better safety features and more car-like handling, the T5 quickly became one of Europe’s most popular medium-sized vans and a leading choice for campervan conversions.

The T5 was available in both short-wheelbase (SWB) and long-wheelbase (LWB) versions, with multiple roof heights and payload options to suit commercial users and campervan converters alike. Engine choices ranged from economical diesel units such as the 1.9 and the 2.5 to the powerful 3.2-litre V6 petrol, while the introduction of the 4MOTION four-wheel-drive system made the T5 even more capable for year-round touring.

The first-generation T5 established the Transporter as one of the UK’s most popular campervan platforms, with many examples still being used today for touring, family holidays and everyday driving.

Volkswagen introduced the T5.1 in 2009, giving the Transporter its most significant update since its launch in 2003. Although not an entirely new generation, the facelift brought redesigned styling, improved technology and a completely new range of more efficient engines, making it one of the most desirable Transporters for campervan conversions.

Externally, the T5.1 received a redesigned front end with a new grille, headlights, bumpers and bonnet, giving it a more modern appearance that aligned with Volkswagen’s passenger car range. Inside, the cabin was refreshed with an updated dashboard, improved switchgear and higher-quality materials, creating a more refined driving experience.

One of the biggest changes was the introduction of Volkswagen’s 2.0-litre common-rail TDI diesel engines, replacing the earlier 1.9 and 2.5-litre units. These engines offered improved fuel economy, lower emissions and quieter operation, while the availability of DSG automatic transmission and 4MOTION four-wheel drive on selected models provided greater flexibility for touring and everyday driving.
