About VW T25 Campervans
Introduced in 1979, the Volkswagen T25 (T3) replaced the iconic Bay Window (T2) while retaining Volkswagen’s proven rear-engine layout. It featured a completely redesigned body with a squarer profile, offering significantly more interior space, improved safety and better handling than its predecessor.
The earliest T25s were powered by air-cooled flat-four engines, making them the last air-cooled Volkswagen Transporters ever produced. In 1983, Volkswagen introduced water-cooled “Wasserboxer” petrol engines and diesel options, providing improved performance and greater refinement for everyday driving and long-distance touring.
The T25 quickly became a popular base for campervan conversions. Leading converters including Westfalia, Auto-Sleeper, Devon, Holdsworth, Danbury and Reimo all produced camper versions, while Volkswagen launched the first California campervan in 1988, based on the T25 and converted by Westfalia.
Today, the T25 is highly regarded for its spacious interior, robust engineering and versatility. It remains a favourite among classic campervan enthusiasts, whether maintained in original condition or sympathetically upgraded for modern touring.
