About the VW Trekker
About the VW Trekker
The Volkswagen Type 181 was introduced in 1968 for military and government use, before entering civilian production in 1969. Built using proven components from the Volkswagen Beetle, Karmann Ghia and Transporter, it was designed to be durable, easy to maintain and capable of tackling challenging terrain.
Although sold under different names around the world, including the Thing in North America and the Safari in Mexico, it became known in the UK as the Volkswagen Trekker when officially launched here in 1975.
Production continued until 1983, with approximately 90,000 vehicles manufactured. Today, the Trekker is prized for its rarity, utilitarian styling and strong enthusiast following.
VW Trekker / Type 181 & Type 182 Model History
The Volkswagen Trekker belongs to the Type 181 family, a range of lightweight utility vehicles developed by Volkswagen during the late 1960s. Designed using proven mechanical components from the Volkswagen Beetle, Karmann Ghia and Transporter, the Type 181 was built to be robust, easy to maintain and capable of operating in a wide variety of environments.
Although best known in the UK as the Volkswagen Trekker, the vehicle was sold under several different names around the world, including the Volkswagen Thing in North America, Safari in Mexico and Pescaccia in Italy. Alongside the standard Type 181, Volkswagen also produced the rarer Type 182, which featured a more refined specification aimed at civilian markets.
Volkswagen Type 181 (1968–1983)
The Type 181 was originally developed in 1968 for military, government and public service organisations that required a simple, versatile utility vehicle. Drawing heavily on Volkswagen’s existing air-cooled parts bin helped keep production costs low while ensuring excellent reliability and straightforward maintenance.
Production for civilian markets began in 1969, with the Type 181 becoming popular throughout Europe thanks to its rugged styling and open-top driving experience.
Key features included:
- Air-cooled flat-four engine
- Rear-mounted engine with rear-wheel drive
- Four-speed manual gearbox
- Independent suspension
- Flat, easily repairable body panels
- Removable doors
- Folding windscreen
- Convertible canvas roof
- Excellent ground clearance
The Type 181 served in a variety of military and civilian roles, including:
- Military transport
- Civil defence vehicles
- Emergency services
- Forestry and agriculture
- Utility fleets
- Recreational vehicles
Its simple construction and shared mechanical components with the Beetle, Karmann Ghia and T2 Splitscreen made it particularly easy to repair, even in remote locations.
Volkswagen Type 182 (1970–1979)
The Volkswagen Type 182, better known in the UK as the VW Trekker, was developed from the successful Type 181, retaining its rugged air-cooled mechanicals and distinctive angular styling while being adapted for right-hand-drive markets. Originally based on a combination of Beetle, Karmann Ghia and Transporter components, the Type 182 offered the same simple engineering and excellent off-road capability that made the Type 181 popular around the world.
Although visually almost identical to the Type 181, the Type 182 was produced primarily for selected European markets, including the UK, where it was marketed as a practical leisure vehicle rather than a military utility vehicle. The most significant difference was its factory right-hand-drive configuration, making it far better suited to British roads. Like the Type 181, it featured removable doors, a folding windscreen and a convertible canvas roof, allowing owners to enjoy open-air driving while benefiting from Volkswagen’s famously dependable mechanical design.
Production numbers for the Type 182 were relatively low compared with other classic Volkswagens, making surviving examples increasingly rare today. This scarcity, combined with the model’s distinctive appearance and strong links to Volkswagen’s military heritage, has made the Trekker highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts. Well-preserved original vehicles, as well as sympathetically restored examples, continue to attract strong interest and values have steadily increased as fewer remain on UK roads.
Are Parts Available for the VW Trekker / Type 181?
Yes. Parts availability for the Volkswagen Trekker remains very good. The Type 181 shares many of its mechanical components with the classic Volkswagen Beetle and Karmann Ghia, meaning many servicing and maintenance parts remain readily available through specialist suppliers like Just Kampers.
Owners benefit from access to:
• Engine components
• Suspension and steering parts
• Brake components
• Gearbox and Clutch parts
• Electrical replacement parts
• Rubber seals and Trim
• Engine service items

Some body panels and Type 181-specific trim pieces are naturally less common than Beetle parts, but a strong international enthusiast network and specialist suppliers continue to manufacture reproduction panels and restoration components.
