FAQs
Why Should You Have Dedicated Day Van Insurance?
We’re here to help find you the perfect campervan day van insurance policy, at a great price. Just Kampers Insurance is full of camper enthusiasts, and we really understand the ins and outs of what makes a camper a ‘day van’ instead of a fully fledged campervan, and are here to use our knowledge and experience to offer you a range of fantastic insurance policies for your day van.
If you didn’t already know, a camper is a day van if it hasn’t been created for long-term camping trips, and so does not fit all of the DVLA requirements for being a camper. You may be able to use your day van as a works van during the week, and then take it away for a day trip at the weekend. This can create a bit of a strange grey area for some, but the team here at Just Kampers Insurance understand what it means to create and own a dayvan, and so can offer bespoke camper day van insurance policies tailor made to you and your camper.
No two day vans will be the same, which is why we use the information you give us and our own knowledge and experience to offer you fantastic policy options at great prices.

Self–Build Campervan Insurance FAQs
What information do I need to get a quote?
Getting a quote with Just Kampers Insurance is quick and straightforward. To help us find the right cover for your vehicle, it’s useful to have a few details ready before you start.
You’ll need:
- Your personal details, including your address and occupation.
- Your vehicle registration number (if available), along with details of your campervan, classic VW, daily driver or commercial vehicle.
- Information about how you use your vehicle, including your estimated annual mileage and where it’s normally kept overnight.
- Your driving history, including any claims, convictions or No Claims Bonus.
- Details of any additional drivers you would like to include on the policy.
- Information about any modifications, accessories or agreed vehicle value where applicable.
If you decide to go ahead with your quote, you’ll also need your preferred payment method (and bank details if paying monthly), your previous insurer’s name and policy number, and your current mileage reading.
Having these details ready means we can search our range of specialist insurance options and provide an accurate quote as quickly as possible.

I’ve converted my van myself, what insurance do I need?
If your van is self-converted or modified, you will need to confirm that your campervan or motorhome meets the basic DVLA criteria for reclassification in order for it to become road legal, and therefore insurable.
Once you’ve confirmed the roadworthiness of your self–build campervan or motorhome, you will require specialist coverage to legally use it on the road.
What if I’ve purchased a self-build campervan?
If you’ve recently purchased a self–build campervan or motorhome, then you’ll need to declare this when requesting a quote, as modifications will need to be considered as part of your road protection.
Does self-build campervan insurance cost more?
No two policies are priced the same. When it comes to insuring your campervan, generally the cost of insurance will depend on:
- Market rarity
- Driver’s driving history
- Condition
- Declared modifications
- Layers of protection: from third-party to comprehensive
When it comes to securing the right level of protection for a self-build or converted campervan, quote retrievals will focus on the details of your vehicle – because every modification and conversion will have its different requirements.
What modifications will affect my premiums?
When you declare modifications, it’s important to study which parts of your self–build campervan qualify. You’ll want reassurance that the correct layers of protection will secure the full value of your self-converted vehicle, so your premiums need to acknowledge the value of any changes that you’ve made.
Not all changes will affect your premiums. Exterior paint, or smaller cabin accessories are unlikely to affect this. But major mechanical alterations to a vehicle, such as changes in suspension, will need to be declared.
Can you insure a van as a campervan?
The type of insurance required for your vehicle will depend on how it’s classified within its V5C form, or logbook. This will state if your campervan is no longer legally classified as a standard van and, instead, will require a specialist policy type.
