Introduced at the 1961 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Volkswagen Type 3 represented a significant step forward for Volkswagen. Rather than replacing the Beetle, it was designed to sit above it in the range, offering greater practicality, improved refinement and increased luggage capacity for families and touring.
One of the Type 3’s biggest innovations was its air-cooled flat-four “pancake” engine. Unlike the upright engine fitted to the Beetle, the flatter engine layout created additional storage space above the engine, while retaining the familiar rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. Combined with the front luggage compartment, this gave the Type 3 two usable storage areas, something few vehicles of the era could offer.
The Type 3 also became Volkswagen’s first production car to feature electronic fuel injection (Bosch D-Jetronic) on selected models from 1968, demonstrating Volkswagen’s commitment to engineering innovation long before it became common across the industry. By the time production ended in 1973, more than 2.5 million Volkswagen Type 3s had been built, making it one of Volkswagen’s most successful air-cooled model families.

Notchback (1961–1973)
The Notchback (Type 311) was the first Type 3 model to enter production. Featuring a traditional two-door saloon body style, it offered a more spacious interior and significantly more luggage capacity than the Beetle while retaining Volkswagen’s dependable air-cooled drivetrain.
