Specialist Toyota HiAce Campervan Insurance

The Toyota HiAce has become a popular choice for both DIY self-builds and professional camper conversions, thanks to its dependable performance and adaptable interior space. However, once converted into a campervan, a HiAce is no longer a standard van, and it deserves a policy that reflects that change.

Our specialist Toyota HiAce campervan insurance is tailored to:

• Camper-specific usage rather than commercial or commuting use.
• Modifications and fixtures installed during conversion.
• Value of bespoke interiors and equipment.
• Optional extras like contents cover and agreed value protection*
*dependent on policy selection

At Just Kampers Insurance, we work with a panel of trusted insurers who understand campervans and how they’re used, giving you access to comprehensive, flexible cover that ordinary van insurance doesn’t provide.

About the Toyota HiAce Campervan

The Toyota HiAce (pronounced High Ace) was produced between 1989 and 2012 for the UK market and was well-loved during its time. It’s now more popular in Asian/Australian markets, and the 2019 sixth-generation HiAce was launched in the Philippines for the Asian and Australian markets.

In the UK, we’re most likely to see older models manufactured up to 2012, with a similar look to the Mazda Bongo. Available second-hand for up to £25,000, they’re affordable for the predicted lifetime, which is up to 300,000 miles as reported by many owners. They’re not the most exciting to look at, but they do a job, and they do it reliably and well. For adventurers who want a reliable campervan that gives them space and good MPG without breaking down, then the Toyota HiAce is a fantastic choice.

Is the Toyota HiAce a Good Campervan?

Yes, the Toyota HiAce makes an excellent base for campervan conversions. Its reputation for durability, reliable mechanics, and ease of driving makes it a favourite among camper builders of all experience levels.

The HiAce’s strengths include

• Proven reliability and strong resale value
• Practical chassis for conversions of all sizes
• Smooth, familiar driving experience
• Good availability of parts and service centres

Whether you’re planning a lightweight weekend camper or a fully fitted touring home, the HiAce provides a solid foundation that’s both enjoyable to drive and easy to work with during conversion.

Toyota HiAce Wheelbase Options

The Toyota HiAce is available in several wheelbase and body length configurations, which gives you flexibility when planning your camper conversion.

Typical options include:

Standard Wheelbase – Compact and easier to park

Long Wheelbase – Adds interior space for a larger layout

Extra-Long Wheelbase (if available regionally) – Ideal for big builds with fixed beds and luxury features

Longer wheelbases offer more living and storage space, but shorter versions can be easier to manoeuvre in tighter urban or campsite spaces. Choosing the right wheelbase will largely depend on how you plan to use your camper.

How Tall Is the Toyota HiAce?

Standard Roof: Around 1980 mm (approx. 6′ 6″).
Mid/High Roof: Ranges from about 2105 mm up to 2285 mm (approx. 6′ 11″ – 7′ 6″).
Extra-High Roof: Some models offer taller factory options, reaching around 2.6m (approx. 8′ 6″).
Commuter/Bus Models: Larger versions like the Hiace 300 Commuter often come with a high roof for passenger use.

Are Parts Available for the Toyota HiAce?

Yes, parts availability for the Toyota HiAce is strong across the UK and Europe. As a widely used commercial vehicle, HiAce mechanical and body parts are generally easy to source, either through dealers or specialist suppliers. This makes maintaining your camper and carrying out upgrades or repairs simpler and more cost-effective.

There’s also a healthy aftermarket of camper conversion parts that fit HiAce layouts, including insulation kits, windows, pop-tops, electrics, and storage solutions.

Do I Need Special Insurance for a Toyota HiAce Campervan?

Yes, specialist campervan insurance is highly recommended if your Toyota HiAce has been converted or will be used for leisure travel.

Standard van or car insurance may not:

  • Properly cover the value of fixtures and fittings
  • Recognise how you use the vehicle for holidays and long trips

Give you access to features like Agreed Value or Contents Cover

Specialist campervan insurance ensures your unique build, accessories, and intended use are accurately reflected in your policy, helping avoid gaps in cover and giving you protection when you need it most.
