Why Should You Have Dedicated Classic Car Insurance?
If you own a classic, you already know it’s not just another car. Whether it’s something you’ve lovingly restored, a weekend cruiser, or a cherished family heirloom, your pride and joy deserves insurance that recognises its true value, and that’s where dedicated classic car insurance comes in.
Unlike standard car insurance, which treats every vehicle the same, classic car insurance is tailored specifically for older and often rarer vehicles that are used less frequently and maintained with care. It’s designed with enthusiasts in mind, offering features like agreed value cover, so in the event of a total loss, you’ll get back what the car is actually worth, not just what a computer thinks it’s worth. That alone can make a huge difference when dealing with older vehicles that are appreciating in value or simply can’t be replaced like-for-like.
Specialist cover also takes into account that you’re probably not using your classic for the daily commute, which means limited mileage discounts can help bring the cost down, too. And if your classic’s still undergoing restoration, or if you’ve got rare parts stashed away in the garage, we can make sure those are covered as well.
Whether you drive a classic British saloon, a Japanese import, an Italian sports car or a bit of American muscle, having a policy that understands your vehicle is just as important as maintaining it, from cover for shows and rallies, to protection while your vehicle’s off the road or under restoration, our classic car insurance is designed to fit around your lifestyle and your car’s.
It’s about giving you peace of mind, knowing your classic is properly looked after, with support from people who genuinely understand what makes these cars special.

Classic Car Insurance FAQs
How much is classic car insurance?
The exact costs of every policy will vary depending on its make and model. If you’re on the market for classic car insurance, you’ll need our expert advice for a fuller picture. No two policies are the same, either. Instead, each policy will be tailored to your specific circumstances and the details of your car.
Typically, your premium will be influenced by a number of factors, including the specific make and model of your classic car. A quote for classic car insurance will also capture the modifications, mileage, and history of your vehicle.
What classic do you cover?
Just kampers Insurance can bring you tailored vehicle insurance policies for classic vehicles ranging from British icons such as the Mini or the Bentley S3, through the spectrum of global icons ranging from the Porsche 911 to the Volkswagen Beetle.
How do Agreed Value policies work?
In order for Agreed Value policies to go ahead and a valuation to be approved, we need several photographs and receipts for parts / labour. This gives us the evidence we need of any upgrades and restorations that have been applied to your Classic Car. We will then review these and send you an Agreed Value certificate.
Do you offer any discounts?
We offer owner’s club discounts, discounts for limited mileage, and discounts for after-market security applied to your vehicle.
When does a car become a classic?
According to HMRC, a vehicle is classified by them as a ‘historic vehicle’ (or classic) once it’s older than 40 years old, but only if there haven’t been any ‘substantial changes’ in the last 30 years. This includes things like replacing the chassis, replacing the body, changing the axels, or swapping the engine to change the way the vehicle works. This likely means that swapping a petrol engine for a diesel, for example, is fine as it doesn’t change the way in which your vehicle works, but replacing a petrol engine for an electric motor will probably see your vehicle no longer classed as a classic by HMRC.
It’s definitely worth checking this with them directly, though, as the wording could be open to interpretation. While the above is the guidance given by HMRC and applies to things like MOT exemption, the same isn’t necessarily true for insurance providers.
We feel at Just Kampers Insurance that one size does not fit all. Classic cars have a large and enthusiastic following around the world. They’re not like everyday, ‘normal’ cars, similarly to the way in which classic car owners are not like other motorists. This is why it is important to find an insurance policy that fits within your specific requirements!
If you’re not sure whether your vehicle counts as a classic, then get in touch with our friendly team of experts on 01256 44 45 46 or click here to contact us by email, and we’ll take a look and get back to you as soon as we can.
When does a car become tax-exempt?
As a general rule of thumb, your vehicle will become tax-exempt when it reaches the age of 40. If your vehicle is listed on the V5C registration certificate (log book) as “first registered” more than 40 years ago (i.e. 1982) and is one of the qualifying vehicles mentioned in the DVLA leaflet INF34, you can tax it under the ‘historic vehicle’ tax class starting from 1 April.
The DVLA provides a few days of grace at the end of the year for vehicles with “first registered” dates up to and including 7 January 1983 to qualify for tax exemption.
Currently, a vehicle that was “first registered” on or before 7 January 1983 will be considered by the DVLA as built in 1982, making it tax exempt from 1 April 2023.
If your vehicle was “first registered” after this date but before 31 December 1983, you will have to wait until 1 April 2024.
Vehicles that are younger than 40 years old become eligible for historic vehicle tax in the April following the year they turn 40.
For instance, a vehicle “first registered” in February 1983 will be eligible for historic vehicle tax from 1 April 2024.
Does a classic car need an MOT?
The Department for Transport (DfT) states that cars 40 years and older no longer have to undergo their annual roadworthiness check, known to most as an MOT.
Prior to the rule change which was announced May 2018. Only vehicles built or first registered before 1960 were MOT exempt, which accounted for almost 200,000 cars on the road at the time. This number has increased dramatically – as many as 300,000 extra cars became MOT exempt as a direct result of the changes.
Classic car MOT exemption does not apply to vehicles that have undergone significant modification – or ‘substantial change’ – in the past 30 years. Click here to view the Historic (classic) vehicles: MOT exemption criteria.
Is Classic Car insurance cheaper?
Generally, classic cars can be cheaper to insure, but this depends on the vehicle and its usage. With a Just Kampers Insurance policy, we can apply Limited Mileage Discounts, which can assist in keeping costs down. Every Classic car and owner is different so we would highly recommend you speak to our specialist team to discuss your requirements and get the best possible policy that suits you and your Classic’s usage.
