About VW T2 Campervans
The Volkswagen Type 2 has become one of the world’s most iconic campervans. Its story began with the Split Screen, introduced in 1950, before evolving into the Bay Window in 1967. Both generations shared Volkswagen’s dependable rear-mounted air-cooled engine and simple mechanical design, making them ideal platforms for campervan conversions.
The Split Screen (1950–1967) earned its nickname from its distinctive two-piece windscreen and quickly became a favourite with conversion companies such as Westfalia, Dormobile, Devon and Canterbury Pitt. Today, early models, particularly the rare Barndoors (1950–1955), are among the most desirable classic Volkswagens, while later Split Screens benefited from larger engines, improved braking and increased refinement.
In 1967, Volkswagen introduced the T2 Bay Window, replacing the split windscreen with a single curved glass panel that improved visibility and gave the model its familiar name. Produced until 1979, the Bay Window offered more interior space, improved handling and stronger mechanicals, making it one of the most popular campervan bases ever built. Early Bay models (1967–1971) retained much of the classic styling, while the later models (1972–1979) introduced larger engines, improved brakes and better touring capability.
Today, both the Split Screen and Bay Window remain highly sought-after by collectors and campervan enthusiasts.
