Classic Number Plates on Your Classic VW: Can Any Vehicle Have Them?

17 October 2025

There is something timeless and nostalgic about the finishing touch the old style black and silver classic number plates make to your vehicle. They proudly represent the fact that your vehicle is a true, proud and trusted survivor, but they are not just a styling item you can choose to add to any old vehicle. As ever there are rules, and rules are to be obeyed, so please read on or you could be fined…

Since April 2015 vehicles manufactured before the 1st January 1975 can display the old style black and silver number plates, but you must be registered within the Historic Vehicle tax class. This is easy to do, and also means that your vehicle will be exempt from road tax and not require an MOT – although it’s still recommended that you continue to submit your classic for an MOT each year, to help ensure it’s still in top condition.

Once you’ve checked that your vehicle is eligible for a black-and-silver number plate, you’ll need to find an authorised supplier and go to them with your vehicle’s log book and some photo ID to have your number plate made up.

In summary, any vehicle manufactured before the 1st of January 1975 is eligible for black and silver plates, as long as it is registered as a classic vehicle for road tax purposes and the plate is created by an authorised supplier. Failure to do so could result a fine.
