"We had (and still have) an insurance policy through Just Kampers with Trinity Lane. We bought the policy because the premium was much more competitive than we had been quoted elsewhere. We had been advised by our vehicle restorer (VW Kampers) to make sure we had an agreed valuation and so we insured the vehicle for £18,000. The vehicle in question was “Custard” a 1975 Late Bay Oregon import. It was a 2.0L automatic in Canary Yellow which we are told is a very rare colour as it was only available for 2 years. Unfortunately after waiting nearly 6 months for the restoration and some other mechanical repairs we had only used him a few times before we set off to a friend’s wedding reception in Lyme Regis for the weekend. We travelling on the A303 towards Stonehenge when the traffic in front of us slowed to a stop. I noticed a puff of smoke in the wing mirror and pulled over to check it out. The result was an engine bay fire that couldn’t be contained by FOUR fire extinguishers and soon we had to retreat to a safe distance as the fire really took hold. We closed the A303 during Friday night rush hour (sorry everyone!). We saved as much as we could from inside but most of the stuff was in the rear above the fire and under the seats and it really wouldn’t have been safe to keep going back in. The vehicle was a total write off. Fortunately the agreed valuation (and the money received for the contents) enabled us to purchase “Roobarb” a red 1973 Bay for £18,000 and we had enough money to buy new camping gear AND a marine grade 2kg automatic fire extinguisher in the engine bay!!! We’ve enjoyed Roobarb immensely this summer so far and will be taking her to France this month. Losing Custard was totally devastating and that weekend was like mourning for a lost family member. I think we’re more or less over it now, but if it hadn’t been for the agreed valuation I’ve really no idea what we would have done. The lucky winner of our Just Kampers Insurance prize draw which we ran throughout the 2011 show season is Steve Sheene. He won £215.00 Just Kampers Gift Vouchers (equivalent value to one year’s free insurance for his T4 van). Steve said “It’s fantastic news that I have won, as I am not the luckiest of people. The vouchers will come in handy as I am always spending lots of money on my beloved camper and have recently been told that my present job after 21 years is coming to an end in December.” Steve told us how he had searched for a long time for his T4, and managed to pick up a plain standard camper which he stripped completely, removing doors, windows, bumpers, all panelling, seats and tail gate. He spent many hours and lots of money rebuilding it. Steve’s pride and joy is a 2.5 TDI with oil cooler and rare air conditioning, which he had painted in Audi R8 colour Sepang blue. Steve went on to explain why he chose Just Kampers Insurance: “I recently renewed my insurance with a different company at a cost of over £340, to find that when I tried to get an agreed valuation, I was told just because I had some new wheels and a paint job it didn't mean its worth any more!
